Fried insects are a predominant part of food culture in the northeaster Isaan region of Thailand. Until the economic boom of the early 1990's, this agrarian region was the poorest in Thailand, and the myriad of creatures that flew, crawled, swam or burrowed therein represented tasty and cheap sources of dietary protein.
